GPS Full Form: How does GPS work?

GPS full form means Global Positioning System. It is a satellite-based navigation system that allows ground users all over the world to determine their exact location, velocity and time in 24 hours in all weather conditions.

If GPS is said in simple terms, then it is a Global Navigation Satellite System that is used to find the location of anything.

The Brief History of Global Positioning System(GPS Full Form)

The first Global Positioning System(GPS Full Form) was developed in the 1960s to assist US Navy ships in navigating the oceans more accurately. The first system started with five satellites that enabled ships to check their location once every hour.

This system was first created by the US Department of Defense in 1960. At that time this system was made for US Army use only. But later on 27 April 1995 it was made for everyone and today we get to see it in our mobile too.

GPS technology is used so much that you can use it in your Mobile, Rail, Bus, Car so that you can use it in Caravan as well. Friends, in today’s time, much is being done to search the path.

For this reason, it is more used in transport in today’s time. Friends, with the help of this, we can search any way very easily. We can easily know the distance of another location from our location.

How does Global Positioning System work?

GPS is a group of 32 satellites located 26,600 km from the Earth’s surface. GPS Receiver tells the location based on the signals sent from these satellites.

It uses four satellites for better calculation. It gives information about the user’s Three Dimensional Position Latitude, Longitude Line and Elevation.

GPS is divided into three different parts such as –

  • Space Segment
  • Control Segment
  • User Segment

Space Segment:

  • It is from satellites that transmit signals from space, based on which the user’s time and position are measured.
  • The set of friends Satellites is called Nakshatra.
  • GPS uses two satellite constellations i.e. NAVSTAR and GLONASS
  • NAVSTAR designed 24 satellites, placed in 6 orbital planes, tilted along the equator at 55 degrees and a duration of 12 hours.
  • They orbit around 20,200 km altitude.
  • Each satellite has four precise atomic clocks, of which only one is used at a time.

Control Segment:

  • The control segment consists of a group of 5 ground-based monitor stations, three antennas, and a master control station.
  • The master control facility is located at Schriever Air Force Base (formerly Falcon AFB) in Colorado.
  • Monitor stations measure signals continuously from the SV and provide data to the master control station.
  • The master control station calculates satellite almanac and clock correction coefficients and forwards them to an antenna.
  • The antenna transmits data to each satellite at least once a day. SVs then transmit subsets of orbital almanacs to GPS receivers over radio signals.

User Segment:

  • The GPS user segment consists of GPS receivers and user communities.
  • The typical receiver is composed of an antenna and pre-amplifier, radio signal microprocessor, control and display device, data recording unit and power supply
  • Global Positioning System(GPS Full Form) receivers convert SV signals into position, velocity and time estimates. A minimum of four satellites is required to calculate the four dimensions of X, Y, Z (position) and time.
